Description and Requirements

Enel Green Power is seeking a Senior SCADA Engineer to join its O&M team, based in Johannesburg, to
support Enel Green Power’s O&M activities in the Sub-Saharan African region.

The SCADA Systems Engineer will be responsible for managing the design, installation, and commissioning processes for the SCADA Systems during the Engineering and Construction, as well as the Operations and Maintenance phases of Enel Green Power’s renewable energy power plants. He/she will participate in and contribute to other areas within the O&M department as required, working closely with key business partners, internal technology teams and external vendors. He/She will implement processes for relevant platforms and ensure compliance with requirements, company policies and cybersecurity policies within EGP. The SCADA Systems Engineer may also be responsible for providing technical support to the Business Development Unit regarding the SCADA System architecture requirements and feasibility studies.

What you will do: 

Design, Implementation and Documentation: 

  • Design and implement SCADA systems within the plant monitoring and control environment, ensuring reliability, accessibility, and compliance with local regulations and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).
  • Installation, management, maintenance, and documentation of the SCADA Systems and related components.
  • Provide engineering of digital solutions in support of the overall objectives of EGP Southern Africa.
  • Participate in the design and setup of SCADA infrastructure for new plants in collaboration with Engineering & Construction, other relevant teams, and the EGP Digital Solutions organisation.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for design rules, network topology, cabling layouts, communication and routing protocols, and equipment configurations across EGP headquarters, plants, and control rooms.
  • Operations, Maintenance and Security: 
  • Manage and maintain SCADA systems, ensuring continuous availability and operational efficiency.
  • Monitor plant and control room network and security equipment using appropriate tools or in collaboration with ICT department, and specialist suppliers.
  • Apply software and firmware updates to SCADA systems and related devices.
  • Implement and maintain process control security measures and network equipment configurations.
  • Collect and manage security logs for equipment and plant connectivity.
  • Collaborate with ICT to administer centrally located user accounts, permissions, and access profiles for SCADA systems, network systems, and process equipment.
  • Maintain and manage the IP Addressing Plan for the area of responsibility.
  • Ensure compliance with defined internal processes for managing changes in SCADA architecture across plants and control rooms.

Governance, Oversight and Leadership:

  • Provide technical leadership, governance, and oversight for SCADA system design and implementation.
  • Ensure alignment with organisational strategies, operational requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Drive standardisation of system architecture and integration across multiple sites.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for SCADA-related decisions and troubleshooting.
  • Stakeholder, Vendor and Contract Management:
  • Collaborate with business unit executives and service providers to introduce new system functionalities into the SCADA environment.
  • Coordinate activities with local and central O&M departments in line with Digital Solutions processes.
  • Create and manage Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with third-party providers.
  • Oversee vendor performance to ensure compliance with technical, operational, and contractual requirements.
  • Participate in the periodic Digital Solutions budget definition process.
  • Manage CAPEX, OPEX, and purchase requirements using the organisation’s CRM and ERP systems.
  • Administer budgets and contracts for the area of responsibility, ensuring cost control and value delivery.

Who you are: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Automation or Mechatronics or equivalent.
  • Master’s Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Information Security, and/or Business Administration will be considered an advantage.
  • 5 - 10 years’ experience in a SCADA/ICS Engineer role. 
  • Experience in a renewable energy organization will be considered an advantage.
  • CRISC, GICSP, CISSP Certification an advantage.
  • Proven track record in leading SCADA system projects, architectures, and processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects for controlling industrial processes, with preference for power generation, distribution, and/or transmission grid applications.
  • Broad ICT infrastructure knowledge with in-depth, up-to-date expertise in SCADA systems, Industrial Control Systems (ICS), Operational Technology (OT), and the South African Grid Code
  • Experience in ICS networking and security.
  • Experience with Energy Management Systems (EMS) and their supporting architectures.
  • Knowledge of major IP-encapsulated process control protocols: Modbus TCP, PROFINET, DNP3, IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-101/103/104, and ICCP/TASE.2.
  • Knowledge of OT/ICS security standards and guidance (e.g., IEC 62443, IEC 62351, NERC CIP, NIST SP 800-82).
  • Knowledge of OPC technologies (OPC UA, OPC DA, OPC XML-DA).
  • Knowledge of redundancy, failover, and disaster recovery for SCADA systems.
  • Good understanding of OT security risks and vulnerabilities in operational environments.
  • Solid understanding of IT/OT fundamentals and their integration.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server/Active Directory and networking architectures from both server and client perspectives.
  • Good knowledge of ISO/OSI layered model.
  • Sound knowledge of IP protocols and their services at the application layer such as: RIP, RDP, FTP, HTTP, BGP, SSH and Telnet.
  • Familiarity with information security management standards (e.g., ISO/IEC 27001 and related 27000-series).
  • Knowledge of Project Management methodology and tools.
  • Experience with network and virtualization technologies (e.g., switches, firewalls, Hyper-V; UTM devices) is advantageous.
  • Experience with leading SCADA/HMI suites and data historians, including alarm management and trending.
  • Experience with OT change control, patch management, vulnerability management, and incident response tailored to ICS.
  • SAP experience will be considered an advantage.
